Grade Level: 9 Support/Core: Core

Course Description

Algebra I at DCP is aligned to the California state standards for Algebra I. However, much of the first semester is devoted to the development of school culture (homework habits, readiness habits) and the review of middle school standards. Consequently, we do not expect to reach all of the state standards for Algebra I during this year. The standards that are not taught in Algebra 1 are covered in Algebra 2.

Furthermore, DCP believes that success at higher levels of math is strongly connected to success in Algebra. As a result, Algebra I is regarded as a gatekeeper class and a class in which the line for meeting expectations is strongly held. We have seen too many students struggle in Algebra II and Geometry simply because the Algebra basics had not been mastered and they were passed on anyway. Thus, mastery of the basic Algebra skills is expected from all.
