Course Description
The purpose of College Readiness
is to prepare students for the rigors of fulfilling the DCP mission. As first-generation students striving
for the opportunity to attend and graduate from a four-year university, DCP 9th graders must be prepared to meet this challenge academically, emotionally and
culturally. The College Readiness
curriculum is designed to build in our students the skills that will be
necessary for them to succeed in DCP courses and lay a solid foundation for
success in college courses. These
skills include critical thinking, literacy, numeracy, knowledge of self, and
study skills such as note-taking, presentation, test-preparation, time
management, and goal-setting. But,
the essence of the College Readiness curriculum is its focus on intrinsic
motivation, the DCP value of ganas. Students who complete this course will go on to 10th grade having reflected on their reasons for wanting a college education and will possess the vocabulary to express this desire, this ganas.
This Course Supports: English 1
Description and rationale of the relationship between the courses:
This course supports the 9th grade English 1 curriculum in collaboration with the 9th grade Verbal Reasoning curriculum. The three lead teachers meet monthly to align curriculum objectives as well as the pacing of unit projects. The team's purpose is to lay the foundation for building literacy across the curriculum as well as build a common language among all 9th grade students regarding reading and writing skills.
College Readiness works with English 1 to support and enhance students learning of the writing process. While Verbal Reasoning strives to help students become better readers in order to succeed in English 1, College Readiness strives to help students become better writers for the same end.
In addition, College Readiness supports the DCP curriculum as a whole by directly teaching college ready behavior and the skills necessary to succeed in college prep courses at DCP.
